Unique San Diego Voters Guide

By Frances O'Neill Zimmerman, La Jolla

Wednesday, May 14, 2008 | A uniquely San Diego voters' guide appeared Tuesday: the Union-Tribune editorially endorsed (almost) everyone and everything I and many other San Diegans oppose. Proposition C (Fox in the Henhouse) and the toll road through Trestles! Opponents of Sherri Lightner, our best hope for City Council from District 1! George George, retired firefighter from fire-ravaged District 5! Marti Emerald, ex-TV consumer rights reporter running in District 7! The U-T is flummoxed by District 3 for some reason, but the best qualified person is Stephen Whitburn! (No mention of Aguirre or Francis, but yes to them both too!)

"Tuesday's U-T editorial endorsements certainly raised some eyebrows. For those of us who vote in District One it was especially troubling. The U-T editorial defines D1 as running from La Jolla to Torrey Hills. I guess that anyone registered East of the I-5/805 corridor is simply out of luck. Kinda makes you wonder about the quality of the remainder of their informed choices when they don't even know that Carmel Valley, UTC and Penasquitos exist. So much for the source, neh?"

"The UT endorsement in District One does a disservice to the entire community. Not only does it ignore the substantial community works performed by both Ms. Lightner and Mr. Thalheimer, it is a slap in the face of all D1 residents to suggest that more-of-the-same Merrifield best fits the role of reformer when his biggest community accomplishment is playing kickball with ten-year-olds. I'm surprised the UT didn't just suggest that we rescind term limits and keep Peters in office."

"Lets see if we can get this straight, the UT endorses the carpet bagging, self proclaimed government expert that has never run anything even remotely close to a city program. DeMaio claims he does not even live in San Diego in court documents after voting in the election. On the other hand GEORGE GEORGE a retired senior chief officer from the San Diego Fire Department and former fire chief in Salano Beach is ignored. A long term veteran of public service with an extensive history of coming up with creative ways of doing more with less. Oh… and he has lived in the district for over four decades. Everyone needs to go to dirtydemaio . com and learn more about Carl. I say hold DeMayo."

"Frances O'Neill Zimmerman, author of the above letter, seems to use VOSD as her own little playpen as she opines at length on nearly everything. (as does Ian Trowbridege(?) I have learned to pretty much ignore these gadflies as I largely disagree on virtually everything they say. Especially when different than mine, I enjoy reading other peoples' informed opinions if they are presented logically and succently. That is not the case with their repeated ramblings which amount to little more than cyberspace graffiti. I hope that VOSD will implement a maximum one letter per every 30 days policy."

"FOZNFOG not only can't spell but is also annoyed by my frequently expressing a point of view here. I say Lord love voice editors for encouraging comment from readers, even less than logical, succinct (note correct spelling) and informed opinion that may differ from the editors' own positions. Should the voice ever implement the infamous sieve of a "maximum one letter per every 30 days policy," that would make it like the Union-Tribune, and that would be a great pity. So thank you, voiceofsandiego.org, for what you do and how you do it."

"You're right, FO'NZ, your opinion is "less than logical" and not very "informed". Your voter guide -- Lightner, Whitburn, George x 2, Emerald, Aguirre and Francis -- just yields more of the "same old same old", which means taxpayers will keep getting screwed. But I will be bipartisan here and agree that, if Voice ever enacts a 30-day letter policy, it will have fallen a few rungs down the ladder of free speech."

"OK let's analyze the FOG: it doesn't agree with FONZ's ballot choices and disparages her for expressing them as well as her reaction to the SD UT selections. The FOG is a jerk about it and snotty to boot. // Voting differences are a personal prerogative, and it seems that the FOG has stepped more out of line in democratic decorum than for which he could ever justifiably castigate the FONZ."

"Francis wants more of, higher taxes, employee pensions, which steal services from those taxpayers. Her candidates are all the union backed people whom will bring us more of the same. I want independent, successful candidates whom are not beholding to the unions, whom are not job hopping."

"Robert -- I never said MY opinion lacks logic or was uninformed: I was generalizing about the voice's broad-minded letters policy. Believing in the free marketplace of ideas is not a partisan position -- it's just small-d democratic and apparently we agree on its value. As for "same-old same old," I am hoping my four new choices for Council will bring with them a new sense of public service and personal decency that their predecessors either lost while in office or never had in the first place. Christopher -- thanks for calling FOG a "snotty jerk." Lee -- I am FrancEs, not FrancIs, and I never gear my election-year hopes to union choices. I just want people who will be independent, smart, honest and not as terminally self-serving as the present exiting bunch. That's why I suggest Francis, Aguirre, Lightner, Emerald, George and Washburn. Nothing ventured, nothing gained!"
